Decorating holiday trees with popcorn garlands is a uniquely American tradition. While German settlers were the ones to introduce the practice of decorating a Christmas tree in the home, using popped or plain corn kernels to decorate objects can be traced even further back to indigenous populations in the Americas and Aztec civilizations. 🌽🎄

Unfortunately, popcorn garlands are not practical these days for anyone who has a pet, particularly hungry family members, or if you don’t want a conga line of ants through your living room. So if you love the history and the aesthetic of a traditional popcorn garland, but can’t use the real thing, we have a crafty solution for you–fluffy crocheted popcorn that can be reused year after year! You can put it on your tree, drape it across the mantle, hang it on the stairs, layer it over curtains, or just make a shit ton of kernels and pretend you live at the movie theater.

And since popcorn is best served with a good movie, we will also be watching the Christmas classic Elf during this workshop!

Each attendee will get 3 skeins of yarn in special seasonal colors, a large bag of red wooden beads for faux-cranberry accents, and a mini skein of cream ricorumi yarn for stringing the garland together.

The workshop will start with instructions on how to make the popcorn kernel pattern, then we will turn on the movie and get poppin! We will also provide guidance on how to string your garland and tips for hanging.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a beginner-level pattern to learn, but you must already know basic crochet stitches and techniques before taking the workshop.
