Button up buttercup! Time to celebrate the classic work-horse of pants and cardigans everywhere: the button.
Here are some fun button facts for you:
- A button collector is called a fibulanomist.
- National Button Day was established in 1938 by the National Button Society to promote button collecting as an organized hobby.
- The earliest decorative buttons date back to around 2000 BCE in the Indus Valley Civilization.
- Functional buttons with buttonholes were first seen in 13th-century Germany.
- Even buttons couldn’t resist the patriarchy. Until the 19th century, most buttons were used for men's clothing. But don’t worry, once women’s fashion started including buttons in the mid-1800s, women took back all the button power and became the primary consumers.
- The word button is from the French word bouton, meaning bud or knob… which somehow feels dirty for such an innocent item? Gives a whole new meaning to don’t push my buttons!
Of course the button itself can be decorative, but the way you sew on a button can add even more whimsy to a garment or accessory! In this workshop we will create our own adorable button sampler to experiment with different styles for embroidering on buttons.
Maybe you want to make a baby spider that will scare people who look too closely at the buttons on your shirt (get your eyes off my chest!). Maybe you want little cherries in the button holes to make your outfit fruitier. Or perhaps you should add suns and stars to each button to brighten everyone’s day.
We will provide the buttons, just bring your own butt! All supplies are included and you can keep the finished hoop as its own decorative piece of art.
Now tighten that button hole and sign up to join us! No one likes a solitary button.
